As some of you may know, Peyton had a little accident. She was running and fell into the TV stand. And as a result she hurt her teeth. She came to me crying and pointing to her chin (which was pink). I gave her a kiss and she was on her way. About a half hour later, I was putting on her coat and she smiled at me... that's when I noticed that she had chipped her teeth. She looked like this:.JPG)
Now let me give you a little background on Peyton's teeth. Instead of having normal front teeth (an E and an F), Peyton has two Es and a F. Picture below is of normal primary teeth.
Here's Peyton (back in July) prior to her chip. You can see the two teeth are pretty close together.
Close up! Her two teeth were so close when they first came in we didn't know if it was one or two teeth. With a little work, our dentist was able to push some floss in between them- and that's how we figured out they were two.
So...back to the accident. E1 is fractured and loose. E is chipped bad enough where there is almost exposure. Our dentist referred us to a pediatric dentist to take care of it. Well, they took pictures and x-rays of her teeth. The x-rays of her two Es did not show a clear line between them. In other words, the dentist couldn't tell if they shared a root or not. She didn't want to pull E1 without knowing for certain if it was attached or not to the other. So she referred us to an oral surgeon cause he could pull back the gums and see for himself.
Here's the last picture of Peyton's teeth before surgery. It's almost been a week since the accident. The bottom half of E1 is extremely loose and has moved a lot since the accident (just look back and compare to the first pic). Peyton hasn't quite been herself this week and sometimes she seems clearly irritated by her teeth. But overall, she's been pretty good considering. Quite the trooper! Oh, and last night and first thing this morning, Peyton told me (in the most pathetic voice), "My tooth is broken." But not for long...
Peyton before surgery. She loved the toy pig at the doctor's office... so much that she cried "My piggy" the whole way home.
Well, it turns out that her E1 and E did share a root. So she had "one" tooth extracted. I was surprised at how big it was. It looks huge!
She's been pretty uncomfortable and crabby since surgery (understandable). Nothing is really making her happy. But then she just fell asleep in my arms... too bad I have to wake her up to pick of Jady from school.
Peyton's new smile...
